In Spite of Entropy

It's another day Awash in shades of grey Everywhere is shade Faces seem to fade Fading of the light Bracing for the fight Yet another day Awash in shades in gray Soaked in constant rain And I wrack my brain Don't know where I'm goin' Don't know what to say Don't know what to think But this time I won't sink Into the abyss I'm overcoming this I will overcome The stupid things I've done It's another day Stuck in some display A sense of deja vu I'm not sure what to do But I will sail on Tomorrow a new dawn Just another day Trying to find a way Maybe new mistakes Well, we'll see what it takes To finally break free Of the sabotage in me Wonderin' when I'll find A path that may unwind Through people and their dreams Turned into songs and schemes And I'm wondering when And where to begin There's so much to say It's another day

New Song 03:23
This is a new day Time to sing a new song Did inspiration die? It surely should have come Another day gone by And still nothing done This is a new day Time to sing a new song What is there to do What have I done? Is there nothing new Under this hidden sun? This is a new day Time to sing a new song Caught up in the middle Of being stuck in patterns Continuing to fiddle As a planet burns This is a new day Time to sing a new song But no new words And no new tune will come And it's dawning on me This is no longer fun By the light of the rising sun Soon I'll have to move on

'Let'er rip', but there's many a slip, here's a tip, don't lose your grip Fresh success or a flesh wound mess where I'm enmeshed, I must confess Can't be denied it's a bumpy ride, we slip and slide, somebody lied All hands on deck, at somebody's beck and call, a wreck, about to fall Down and out but not beaten yet What they're doin's got me upset They're sayin' that's the way it goes But why it has to no one knows Each one trying to build their kingdom It's time for us to ride in freedom And justice for all Before we fall Break down and build up again that's the way it goes my friend round and round without an end, every rumour 'round the bend, what will rise will then descend, one thing that you can depend on, have you get a hand to lend? Long's the time it takes to mend  Down and out but not beaten yet...
5.
You can bite the bullet But don't you swallow it Sometimes fate has to be faced It's best not to wallow in it Trapped in a cruel town Where there's nowhere to go but down And out, to get out of the trap A sinking feeling now on tap Hold on, let me catch my breath They threaten a fate that's worse than death But don't panic, let me think Although my mind is on the blink You can bite the bullet... I had a narrow scrape Then I made good my escape After hanging by a thread A stroke of luck, that being said How did it come to this Attacked for daring to persist In existing in the open They say we must be broken You can bite the bullet...
6.
When I was younger I had a hunger Growling deep within my core Somewhere yonder beyond my pond, I Always needed something more Moving onward The road got longer Sliding side to side And back and forth Sometimes no traction, couldn't get no satisfaction What the hell was I looking for? I got knocked around, my friend Then I got knocked around again You know I paid the dues I owed So I could get back on the road That long strange trip through failure Makes success seem all the sweeter I won't be getting stranded Like I was before I got a stronger stride Along the way Arriving and leaving Through each wall's door Looking back over bridges I once burned Lessons learned that I won't ignore I got knocked around, my friend... Now, what’s down the road, beyond This horizon, and this dawn's A new day and I just keep on Just keep on keeping on I got knocked around, my friend...
7.
Hang On 02:28
Hang on... These days who wants to be alone When predators, frenzied, now hone in On targets over which they can win? They look like they'd have some fun Picking us all off, one by one Hang on, hang on Hey now, how's it hanging? How's everything Been lately? We'll hang together Or hang separately It's our choice Let's raise our voices Hang on, hang on Things look bleak, I can't ignore There's been setbacks, that's for sure The way ahead is hard and long Got to keep on keeping on And someday we'll get beyond...

Is it a trick? Is it illusion? Is it magic? Is that the wrong conclusion? To be reaching, what's your teaching? Is it anything like the I-ching? Some angle, some profound position Of genius, truly a magician Of the mind where you will find The questioning will take some time What are these things that are holding me back? What are these things that I seem to lack? You can tell me, or maybe not Try to sell me on what I haven't got I've been getting mystified I'm suspecting somebody lied I'm tempted to skip to a future page Look ahead in this book to a beckoning age With science proceeding, it's casting spells Here's hoping all will then be well You understand the sleight of hand That seems to meet a great demand What are these things... The attempt to live with things in perspective Can be a tad slippery, for perspectives vary How you look determines what you see Sometimes I feel it Most times I don't What will reveal it? I guess I won't Whatever's beyond What do I know? Will I cling on When it's time to go? What are these things...

Busy Bees 02:52
Busy bees swarming round The hive of the tree Swarming bees busily buzzing Making sweet sweet honey Lively and thriving, building their hive in Their customary way, day after day I can't lie, gotta fly Instinct's callin', gotta gather pollen Ain't that the way, I hear somebody say Busy bustling bees find that one day Someone comes along And takes their honey away The frenzy and the buzzing Sometimes you feel a sting Hopefully our business Will never lose its sweetness But suddenly a storm Surrounded by a swarm Feeling some alarm That you may come to harm I can't lie, gotta fly... Busy bees swarming round...
10.
They're flying in formation in the sky I'm left far behind, they're soaring high I am a speck down on the ground, beauty abounds In so many scenes to see all the world around Change is in the air once again Stumbling in between the now and then The wind is blowing the leaves around Before they form a blanket for the ground Looking at the sky, starry eyed There's a need in me that can't be denied And as the dusk falls at the end of the day Honking birds are heard flying away Let me fly away to warmer climes Let changes lead us to find better times Why would we add such heavy burdens to a life With these games that bring unneeded strife?
11.
Tell me who is being played When they say "we don't invade We're just coming to the aid Of the good", but let's not wade Into some semantic debate And it's not all set by fate What do these signals signify ? In this time that tests us, testify When it's time to draw the line Some find it best that they align With those whose motives are malign I guess that counts as a kind of sign You know it's not just there but here That oligarchies can appear And do, and trying to disguise What's here before our very eyes Spread lies that at their brazen style We cannot help but grimly smile
12.
I've run out of alcohol So I'll get high on vitriol But only for a little while And hopefully with style I don't believe in your religion Why be another chess playing pigeon I see the pieces start to fly As you deceive, distract, deny When the light changes From red to green We can move forward This truth can be seen It's difficult to not feel jaded When you see your looks have faded Time will have its way with you In the end, what can you do? It's difficult to not feel jaded When you see your vision's faded Trying to track what has occurred What was clear and crisp is blurred When the light changes From red to green We can move forward Do you know what I mean? Everyone dance, the DJ cried The crowd then joyfully complied It gets right under the skin And the adrenaline kicks in And I saw you in the crowd And the music was too loud For us to really get to talk So we went out for a walk

about

Thanks to the folks in the Songwriters group of the Burlington Writers' Workshop for their feedback- many of the songs on this album were started and/or finished for the workshop!

These songs- they accumulate over time. Ironically, “New Song” is the oldest of the lot- I wrote a version of it back in early 2003! “It's Another Day” dates back to a couple of years after that. The rest were mostly written in 2022- the last to be finished was “The Questioning,” although the lyrics had been around for a while. “Birds Fly Away” was set to the music of the traditional folk tune “L'Hirondelle”, which I originally learned from the Louise Forestier record La Prison de Londres.

about

A Montreal Paul Burlington, Vermont

A Montreal Paul writes songs that skirt the borderline between dreamy art and harsh reality. Although the first couple of albums are more on psychedelic side of alternative rock, more recent albums tend to be more on the acoustic side, although there has been some experimentation with dance beats. ... more
